Get involved and learn with @YourRightsCamp. And swipe for a lil education on the intersection of athletics and activism. In slides 2 + 3 you’ll learn how oppression + racism can affect athletes, c/o @bodega. In 4, 5, 6 you’ll see Kap’s peaceful protest against the police violence + brutality experienced by POC in America, AND learn that he began kneeling at the recommendation of an Army Veteran named @nateboyer37. In slide 7 you’ll see Nate supporting Kap on the field during his protest (this image is actually Nate’s profile pic). And in slides 8 and 9 you’ll see John Lewis kneeling in the 60’s. The photograph in slide 8 was taken in 1962, during Civil Rights demonstrations. There is a long history of protestors kneeling in acts of peaceful civil disobedience. In September of 2017 Rep Lewis said, “The young people kneeling today are following a long tradition,” and that “There is nothing wrong with kneeling down to stand up against injustice. It’s protected by the Constitution.”

Looking at history, and the reality of Kaepernick’s more recent movement, I can’t help but think that so often we look back at heroes and love them from the vantage point of the present. We say “of course we’d have joined the protests back then! They were important!” But would we? Right here, right now, we have the opportunity to stand on the right side of history. To quit buying into the distraction tactics from the powers that be and instead look into the eyes and experiences of our neighbors. Will we show up for each other? Will we dismantle broken systems and rebuild new ones together? Will we, finally, acknowledge in our bones that our liberty is bound together? Will we take a stand? Will we take a knee? Will we BE stronger together? #ImWithKap #KnowYourRights

*For another example of an athlete being vilified for taking a stand, Google “Muhammad Ali, draft 1971.” See how he was demonized — all the way to the SCOTUS — for his protest, eventually glorified, and co-opted in legacy. As a nation, we erased how we hated him and only talk about how he was “The Greatest.” But he too paid a price. This is not new. It’s on US to change it.
