石材屋のご主人が趣味で営む「みんなの湯」。
今回は、そのご主人が建立された石碑を見るため、茨城県北茨城市を訪れました。

石碑が建てられたのは、2024年7月20日。
広島への原爆投下から80年が経った今。
その前段階として、米軍が投下訓練用に開発した「模擬原爆」（通称パンプキン爆弾）の存在を、私はこの旅で初めて知りました。
全国に49発が投下されたうち、最初の1発が北茨城市に落とされていた。その事実を後世に伝えるために、この石碑は建立されました。
戦争を知らない世代の私ですが、当時の出来事や背景に触れるたび、涙が出そうになりました。

石碑を手がけた86歳の石材職人。
本業のかたわら、地域の人たちの憩いの場として「みんなの湯」という小さなお風呂も造りました。
「石で地域の歴史を後世に残すのが、自分に与えられた役割なんです」
そう語る姿がとてもかっこよくて、心が温まりました。

Everyone's Hot Spring, run as a hobby by the owner of a stone masonry shop.
This time, I visited Kitaibaraki City in Ibaraki Prefecture to see the stone monument erected by that owner.

The monument was erected on July 20, 2024.
Now, 80 years after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
During this trip, I learned for the first time about the existence of the “mock atomic bomb” (commonly known as the Pumpkin Bomb), developed by the U.S. military for bombing practice as a precursor to the actual atomic bomb.
Of the 49 such bombs dropped nationwide, the very first one was dropped on Kitaibaraki City. This stone monument was erected to pass on that fact to future generations.
Though I belong to a generation that doesn't know war, I felt tears welling up every time I encountered the events and context of that time.

The 86-year-old stonemason who crafted the monument.
Alongside his main work, he also built a small public bath called “Minna no Yu” (Everyone's Bath) as a place for local people to relax.
“Preserving the history of this region in stone for future generations is the role given to me,” he said.
Seeing him speak like that was incredibly cool and warmed my heart.
